Preparing for Adulthood

"WHAT IS PREPARING FOR ADULTHOOD?"
According to the new SEN Code of Practice, support for children and young people with SEN should have a focus on preparing them for adulthood. This support should start early and should revolve around the child or young person’s own aspirations, interests and needs.

‘Preparing for adulthood’ means preparing for higher education or employment, independent living, participating in society, and being as healthy as possible.

"HOW ARE LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND OTHER PROVIDERS TO HELP CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH SEN PREPARE FOR ADULTHOOD?"
Local Authorities (LAs), clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), and other service providers should work together to develop coordinated approaches to obtaining better outcomes in adult life for children and young people with SEN.

There should be emphasis placed on preparing for adulthood as early as possible when developing EHC plans, ideally well before the child reaches Year 9 (age 13-14). Children and young people with EHC plans should have a ‘preparing for adulthood review’ during Year 9 and every year thereafter, which places an emphasis on planning for the transition to adulthood, centered on the child or young person’s ambitions and abilities.

LAs are to help young people transition to adult services and support when it is appropriate to do so.
