Notional SEN Budget
“WHAT ARE NOTIONAL SEN BUDGETS?”
The Notional SEN budget ('NSB') is an identified amount of money within a school’s overall budget that is to contribute to the special educational provision ('SEP') of children with SEN or disabilities. It is allocated to schools from a LAs School’s Block. It is not ring-fenced and schools are expected to provide SEN support from the whole of their budget.
“WHAT IS THE NSB FOR?”
Primarily, schools are expected to use their NSB to meet the needs of pupils with high-incidence SEN and to contribute to the cost of provision for high needs pupils. Currently, the government suggests that a school should fund up to £6,000 worth of SEP for a pupil with SEN. However, in practice this figure will vary according to the individual needs of each pupil with SEN.
“IS THEIR ANY OTHER FUNDING AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS FOR SEP?”
On top of the NSB, LAs may provide additional ‘top-up’ funding for individual children with SEN or disabilities out of their high needs block. This may be requested by a school if they believe that the NSB will not cover the cost of suitable SEP for every pupil with SEN.
