Art Therapy
"WHAT IS ART THERAPY?"
Art therapy is a creative form of allowing a child to express their feelings and emotions through a non-verbal way. Children are able to visually express emotions that they may find hard to put into words.
"WHAT DOES ART THERAPY INVOLVE?"
In a session of art therapy, children are able to use a safe outlet for showing any confused and complicated emotions. Children are provided with a range of art materials and given the opportunity to use these materials in a manner that best express how they are feeling. This could be how a child is feeling about a particular occurrence in their life, or their general emotions that they struggle to express verbally. Art therapy also aims to increase a child’s self awareness.
Some art therapy sessions are carried out in small groups, providing the children with the opportunity of relating and understanding each other’s art work. The feelings and emotions displayed in the children’s art work can provide a good insight into how the children would be showing their emotions and feelings verbally, if they could.
