Aniridia
"WHAT IS ANIRIDIA?"
Aniridia is a rare congenital condition which causes incomplete formation and underdevelopment of the iris. This usually affects both eyes. Aniridia causes poor development of the retina at the back of the eye and this prevents normal vision development, leading to a number of complications with the eye, although it does not always cause lack of vision.
All that remains of the iris is a thick collar of tissue around its outer edge and the muscles which open and close the pupil are entirely missing. The appearance of a "black iris" is the result of the large pupil.
