Learning Support Assistants (LSA)/ Teaching Assistants (TA)
WHAT IS AN LSA/TA?
A Learning Support Assistant (LSA), often referred to as a Teaching Assistant (TA), is provided to support teachers and pupils in the classroom. LSAs/TAs work in primary and secondary schools, in mainstream schools, mainstream schools with SEN units and special schools. LSAs/TAs work with all students, not only those with SEN. LSAs/TAs that work with students with SEN help those students individually to meet the targets set in their IEPs.
WHAT DOES AN LSA/TA DO?
The duties of an LSA/TA working with children with SEN are varied depending on the child’s SEN and the type of school that they are working in. They may assist children daily with their physical needs including therapy programmes, with their literacy and numeracy skills and with improving their independent living skills. This will include working towards the targets set in their IEPs. Generally they will give the child any extra support they require to complete tasks.
LSAs/TAs can work 1:1 with a student or with a small group of students. In secondary schools, there is sometimes also a separate learning support department where LSAs/TAs can work with individuals or small groups away from the classroom on work that complements the work being done in the classroom.
